Shot dead: Kyle was said to have killed 160 people during his military career
Former US Navy SEAL and best-selling author Chris Kyle has been shot dead along with another man on a gun range, police in Texas said.
Newspaper reports said Erath County Sheriff Tommy Bryant had confirmed that Kyle, 38, who wrote the book ‘American Sniper’, and a second man were found dead yesterday afternoon at Rough Creek Lodge’s shooting range, west of Glen Rose, about an hour south west of Fort Worth.
The Fort Worth Star-Telegram said witnesses told sheriff’s investigators that a gunman opened fire on the men and fled in a pick-up truck belonging to one of the victims.
According to reports, a 25-year-old man was later taken into custody in Lancaster, south east of Dallas.
The motive for the killings was unclear.
‘American Sniper: The Autobiography of the Most Lethal Sniper in US Military History’ details Kyle’s four combat tours of duty in Operation Iraqi Freedom and the two Silver Stars and five Bronze Stars he was awarded for bravery. It has been claimed he killed 160 people during his career.
Co-author Scott McEwen said he was ‘staggered’ to hear of Kyle’s death. He said: “It just comes as a shock and it’s staggering to think that after all Chris has been through, that this is how he meets his end, because there are so many ways he could have been killed.”
After leaving the Navy, Kyle founded Craft International, a company that provided combat and weapons training to military, police and corporate and civilian clients.
In a interview with Time magazine last year, Kyle admitted that he didn’t regard his targets as people when he took aim.
“The first time, you’re not even sure you can do it,” he said.
“But I’m not over there looking at these people as people. I’m not wondering if he has a family. I’m just trying to keep my guys safe. Every time I kill someone, he can’t plant an IED. You don’t think twice about it.”
