A Saudi cleric has caused outrage in the Middle East over the weekend, after he issued a fatwa against women watching football, claiming they only tune into the sport to gawp at the footballers’ thighs.
The story was first reported by Al Arabiya.
According to story, the imam told his congregants that women “do not care who wins the match, all they care about is watching the player’s thighs”.
Making sure he pressed home his self-declared fatwa, the imam is also reported to have told his congregation a “woman seeing a foreign man is sinful, so what about seeing his thighs and tight kit?”
Rather than taking the fatwa lightly, women have been taking to social media to express their outrage regarding the imam’s decree using the Arabic hashtag “#المرأة_تحب_الكورة_بسبب_افخاذ_اللاعبين” – “#women_love_football_because_of_players’_thighs”.
Also angered by the fatwa, an opinion piece translated in English by the Saudi Gazette stated, “I cannot describe how embarrassed and annoyed I was after listening to a fatwa issued by a local mosque imam.”
Just in case anybody needed reminding, the 2022 World Cup is set to be played in Qatar.
